Znüni | Typography Project
“Znüni,” a word in the spoken language of Swiss-German, refers to the nine o’clock morning coffee break
that is customary in Switzerland. Through these two panels of photographs, I used rich black and white
contrast, the morning light, as well as fresh baked Swiss Zopf to capture the emotion and environment
one might experience during this cultural tradition. Nearly all businesses and schools participate in this
morning break, however not always at exactly nine depending on the work situation. Znüni, represents the
idea of a country pausing to participate in a communal break every morning and demonstrates a deep
connection with the value of life and communication with those around you. These photographs show just
a glimpse of these emotions, cultural traditions, and interactions.
